"The Monsanto Years" Neil Young’s new album is now officially available. Channeling the revolutionary soul of Artie Guthrie, Young’s guitar has been seen with the words “This Machine Kills GMO.” Young and his “Machine” are currently riding a renewed wave of well-deserved grassroots popularity after publicly denouncing Monsanto and Starbucks for their lawsuit against the State of Vermont. After the people of Vermont voted to label genetically modified organisms (GMOs), the Grocery Manufacturers Alliance, of which Starbucks and Monsanto are a part of, promptly swooped in and sued the state in an effort to overturn the ruling. A similar tactic is also playing out in Maui after its people voted to have a temporary moratorium on GMO planting and chemical spraying until further testing can prove their safety.
Young has been a fixture for many decades championing issues dear to the hearts of the American people. Eternally connected to the pulse of the American underdog, it’s fitting he has stepped up to become an unofficial elder kicking dust in the face of agrochemical business and corporate food monopolies. His band also included revolutionary defiance channeled through the generational DNA lineage of Farm Aid co-creator Willie Nelson's sons Lukas and Micah. Fitting like puzzle pieces on a grand chessboard of human perseverance, the ensemble has released songs titled “A Rock Star Bucks a Coffee Shop, Big Box, People Want to Hear About Love” and others.
Young's efforts represent the first time in history that a major music legend has devoted an entire album to overcoming a business sector with public aims to patent all food. Young is in good company with his message and album release as the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s (IARC) recent press release has slapped GMO agrochemicals DDT and 2,4 D with a more severe cancer-causing rating. Both upgrades came in close proximity to the IARC’s upgrade of glyphosate, the world’s most used herbicide, to a rating of “possibly carcinogenic to humans (2B)” rating.
At this point in time, it is strikingly clear that the world is rejecting Monsanto along with other agrochemical giants. In a relatively short time, these companies have become the world’s most hated and despised corporations. They have since defaulted to secret testing, illegal contamination of communities and lawsuits which all signify the last bastion of a dying business model peddling rejected and essentially worthless products. Life rarely has fairy tale endings and storybook heroes, yet as agrochemical business lay on life-support suffering from rapid loss of vital integrity, trust and humanity, it would only be fitting to see Young cast their failed experiment into the dustbin of history with his “GMO killing Machine."
