As evidence and studies continue to mount against public water fluoridation, cities that continue to do so risk individual legal action for damages and human rights violations for force medicating. In Detroit, after becoming the largest American city to file for bankruptcy, there is a move to quickly begin water shutoffs to “protect the city’s budget”. Yet there is still money to be found by the city to purchase hydrofluorosilicic acid (fluoride) from private companies to add to the water supply. In fact, it’s mandated by Detroit city ordinance:
“§ 56-2-58 Authorized. The board of water commissioners, in cooperation with the department of health of the city, is hereby authorized and directed to institute fluoridation of the water supply of the city and to do all things necessary to carry out the directive set forth in this section.”
Violating Human Rights
Detroit, labeled a ‘corporate sacrificed city’ by author Chris Hedges, became ground zero for public frustration in 2014 when a judge ruled to begin shutting off water to roughly 3000 homes per week. This move was halted when international attention came from the work of the Detroit Water Brigade and The Wave Fund causing the United Nations to label the situation a violation of human rights.
In a recent interview with RT, Greg Eno, Public Relations for the Detroit Water and Sewer Department stated:
“If anybody can come up with a way that we can make the Detroit drinking water as good as it is right now for pennies on the dollar we’re willing to listen.”
Common Sense Down The Drain
Published in the Journal of Environmental Health recently was a major study finding states with a higher portion of artificially fluoridated water had a higher prevalence of ADHD. This comes after the highly publicized Harvard study assessing the impact of fluoride on the neurological development in children. As of February 2015, there are a collection of 50 studies investigating the relationship between fluoride and human intelligence. From those 50 studies, 43 have found that elevated fluoride exposure is associated with reduced IQ and data further showing that fluoridation disproportionally harms low-income and minority communities. In response to this data, a growing number of civil rights advocates have begun calling for a moratorium on fluoridation programs. With the studies to back up the common sense call to end water fluoridation, are the cities freely dumping this chemical into their water supply concerned that there is no way to control for individual dosage?
