The Media Insight Project recently concluded a study of 2,014 adults and found that just 6 percent of people say they have a lot of confidence in the mainstream media. About 4 in 10 said they can remember a specific incident that eroded their confidence in the media, most often one that dealt with accuracy or a perception that it was one-sided. According to Margaret Sullivan, public editor of The New York Times “The most important thing that news organizations can do is be accurate, and while we know that is a high value, this study reinforces that.” Sullivan’s statement is laughable when, at the same time she makes this announcement, the New York Times is reporting inaccurate stories about the film Vaxxed and Robert De Niro — among other spin stories and biases.
There are open secrets and silent truths that are becoming extremely uncomfortable in the United States. The major press is biased and heavily influenced by corporate money — a secret to no one. Its message and content is thoroughly pro-pharmaceutical — another statement that is no surprise. Yet with the increased attention being generated by Vaxxed and the Zika scare, the mainstream media’s one-sided reporting has become just plain ridiculous. Despite all producers, the film’s distributors, Robert De Niro and moviegoers stating that Vaxxed is not an anti-vaccine film, headlines still contain this untrue mainstream buzzword. With most of the articles still being written by writers that have not seen the movie, publications have entered the realm of desperation. As more mainstream writers continue their attempts to discredit the film, the faster their organizations lose readers to people who have actually seen the film.
So what happens when a writer sees the movie and attempts to write an honest piece?
Lance Simmens attended the Santa Monica premiere of Vaxxed and penned an article for Huffington Post shortly afterwards titled “Why Our Children Should Hate Us.” After going live on the Huffington Post website for 15 minutes, his article was removed with no warning. In addition, he received no explanation despite sending numerous emails to his chain of contacts at the news outlet. Simmens concludes in the following lines of his now censored Huffington Post article:
“…Vaxxed shows we as a society we can no longer depend upon our government leaders and institutions to protect us.”
The now censored article was reprinted at LAProgressive.com shortly after it was pulled. Meanwhile, with their writers continuing to bash the movie without seeing it, no major mainstream news outlet cared to interview the film’s producers. Sadly, Russia Today (RT) did the first interview with Vaxxed producers Del Bigtree and Dr. Andrew Wakefield recently. The long format RT interview was welcomed after weeks of inaccurate and heavily edited US interviews and movie clips framing the film in an untrue light.
This week, Fox news and CNN are set to sit down with the Vaxxed producers. The public will know shortly if these outlets have decided to change their strategy away from their heavy pro-pharmaceutical stance. De Niro made a second appearance on the Today show. However, this time it was not live and the interview was clearly edited heavily. Yet, De Niro stuck to his guns by defending the themes of the film and urging people to go see the film and do their own research.
